Fabulous day exploring Nuremberg today- true silver lining. Some Viking guests chose to travel by bus to the German city of Regensburg. If our excursion to the Danube Narrows and Weltenburg Abbey had not been cancelled, we likely would have been on that bus. Instead, we find ourselves with an open day to explore Nuremberg on our own. What a gift!

Most of us are familiar with the city of Nuremberg because of the Nazi rallies and later the Nazi trials. Yesterday's bus tour took us through these sites. Centuries prior to this ugly chapter of the city's history, Nuremberg was know for its strategic location. The city center still exists behind the ancient fortress walls with the Imperial Castle (dating back 1000 years) perched at the highest point.

.

The allies targeted the city during WW2, leaving 90% of the city in ruins. Thousands of people were killed. There are many reminders of the devastation, however, many buildings are new or restored. The pedestrian city center is vibrant and bustling.

Above is the Saint Lorenze Church- a beautiful Gothic church which was badly damaged during the war, now fully restored.

Before heading back to the Hilton and another hotel buffet dinner on the patio, we enjoyed a little shopping and sightseeing in this lovely city. Here are a few more random images from the day:
