Alpine tunnels are mind blowing

From France we traveled up to Chamonix, Switzerland, to take in the beauty of Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Europe. There we had a lovely lunch (with a name like tartiflette) of bread, tomatoes, and cheese with salad. The cafe's red umbrellas were in place to provide shade from the warm sun, adding color and contrast to the view of the glacier and snow caps on the mountain range above. Spectacular!

.

We walked around the little town a bit, with many parasails floating and sweeping above us. Beautiful spot.

.

The roads are easy enough to navigate with the built-in GPS system, but quite expensive. We paid four tolls- 32eu, 43,eu, and 4/8. The tunnels are astounding feats of engineering, one of them 20 miles long! I cannot imagine the trip without these "shortcuts" straight through the mountain range. We went through at least ten, with some of the mountain tunnels joined by suspension bridges over the deep valleys.

.

Mind. Blown.
