The Viking staff met us at the airport, whisked our luggage away, and delivered us to the dock to embark upon the Egil, Viking's newest longship and our home for the next seven nights. We did not expect to get into our staterooms until 3:00, but instead we were checked in and escorted upon arrival. The air conditioning in the room was briskly chilly but we acclimated quickly, stretching out on the bed as we waited for our luggage.

The four of us headed up to the Aquavite Lounge on the back deck for a delicious luncheon of mushroom soup, sandwiches, salads (including a cucumber dill salad to die for), and poppyseed cake. Then we showed ourselves around the ship.

The image above shows the top deck where there are shaded lounge chairs, an herb garden, a putting green, and more. Below, the staircase down to the main service desk.

Dinner was delicious! Our server Rolly kept the wine glasses full, serving me a Hungarian specialty of goulash and a Hungarian pastry similar to a tiramisu for dessert.

After dinner, the ship left its dock to give us an evening tour of Budapest at night. The buildings glowed on the shores, the bridges were draped in lights. We sailed upstream, reversed direction around an mid-river island, and we approached the city from the north, passed our dock and turned around again. The views were spectacular!
